The ship speaks, the captain is truly superfluous, and there is a new crewmember. I don’t know where to start.
Why is the ship in charge of the captain? The captain should be in charge of the ship. It says something about Captain Zheng that he is willing to simply give up his authority on this ship to some program. Apparently he was a puppet all along?
Well, that doesn’t matter for me. I signed up as part of Captain Zheng’s crew, and as far as I’m concerned, the captain is in charge. He may take orders from the ship, that’s not my problem, but I’m not taking orders from the ship. Fortunately, we are heading back to Tien Terra Beta with enough cargo to pay my accrued wages, and then I will be rid of this ship, this captain, and this sorry state of affairs.
This new man, Gestler – he’s from the planet of people who tried to kill us, and serves the ship like it is his noble ‘lady’, rather that following the captain, like a proper crewman. Apparently, he had heard about the last time I tried to fight back, and the other people from his world put me in a coma. So he keeps trying to teach me hand-to-hand combat, as to be a bit more successful. I don’t need his pity, and we are going home, so I won’t have to wind up on a planet like his ever again.
I ordered him to go away, and he had the nerve to refuse. I’m the first mate, I outrank him, but he said that he only listens to the ship itself. He understands the chain of command, I’m sure, but apparently does not believe in it.
At least the engineers don’t like him, and he’s managed to bug Dr. Tanaka as well.
