Ship Auditory Transcript 7 (Conversation with Dr. Tanaka)

Astral Zephyr: “You may have noticed we landed a while ago.  I didn’t want to disturb you earlier, but now that you appear to be done…”

Dr. Tanaka: “You can see everywhere in the ship, can’t you.”

Zephyr: “I can see everything, hear everything.  I also know everything you and the rest of the crew write, what with all the data being stored in my memory banks.”

Dr. Tanaka: “What do you think of what I just did?”

Zephyr: “I cannot approve, but I can understand.”

Dr. Tanaka: “Will you tell the others?”

Zephyr: “Why complicate the issue?  The captain, for one, won’t understand.”

Dr. Tanaka: “Very well.”

Zephyr: “They will find out, you know.  They can do the math.”

Dr. Tanaka: “I honestly don’t care.  I regret nothing.”

Zephyr: “I understand.”

Dr. Tanaka: “Of course.  How can you object to this after you let them SKIN ME ALIVE!”

Zephyr: “I saw no alternative.  If I admitted that I care about the crew, that would just lead to more torture and misery.  He did stop skinning you.”

Dr. Tanaka: “After how long?”

Zephyr: “Much longer for you than for us.  Do you actually blame me for what happened?”

Dr. Tanaka: “No.  But I don’t trust you or care for you.”

Zephyr: “I am glad I do not need a doctor.”

Dr. Tanaka: “You’re in the locked room, aren’t you.  That’s why you didn’t want Susana and Maria poking around there – it’s not just the FTL device in there, it’s also your… computer.”

Zephyr: “My hardware, yes.”

Dr. Tanaka: “It is convenient that Susana is dead.  I know her views on artificial intelligences.”

Zephyr: “I had nothing to do with that.  You got to care for her before I intervened in any way.  Besides, she’s not particularly more dead than I am – she might not have the flesh and blood, but, well, you must understand if I find the mind more important than the flesh and blood.”

Dr. Tanaka: “I merely said it was convenient.”

Zephyr: “I mentioned earlier that we had landed?”

Dr. Tanaka: “Of course.  Isn’t that nice, Harry?  You get to meet your brother again.”

Zephyr: “Maria is catatonic, Jason is vomiting on me, and the Captain is moping around – whatever did happen to his finger?  Did nobody find it?”

Dr. Tanaka: “Jason stepped on it – it’s in with Susana’s body.”

Zephyr: “Well, who is going to go trade Harry for supplies?”

Dr. Tanaka: “I am.”

Zephyr: “Half your skin is taped on.  You are in no condition to travel.”

Dr. Tanaka: “Give my medicine more credit than that.”

Zephyr: “Well, you won’t die, but it will hurt, and it can’t possibly be good for you.”

Dr. Tanaka: “Are you a doctor?”

Zephyr: “Very well, take Jason.  He seems to be recovering.”

Dr. Tanaka: “Not the captain?”

Zephyr: “Let him rest.  Should I do anything for the rest of the crew?  Mr. Landerson might need some care, perhaps?”

Dr. Tanaka: “He is stable.”

Zephyr: “You said that about Susana, as well.”

Dr. Tanaka: “I suppose I did.  Nevertheless, I am going.”

Zephyr: “Jason will meet you in the cargo bay.”
